Trauma & PTSD Counseling

No one deserves to go through a trauma. Whatever form it takes—emotional, sexual, physical, one-time, or chronic—trauma and PTSD takes a strong toll. You didn’t choose trauma, and you didn’t choose the unique way your brain copes with it. It’s not fair, and it’s not your fault. We wish more than anything that we could give you a magic pill to make all this undue pain and burden go away. We can’t, but we can walk with you and support, encourage, and help you heal. Newark Behavioral Health is here to stand with you. Together, healing is possible.

What are the Symptoms of Trauma?

Trauma and PTSD are powerful because of how they impact the brain. Our brains are processing millions bits of information every second- it is an incredible organ. But all that data coming in and being processed also means it is more receptible of damage. When a brain encounters a trauma, its primary goal is to protect itself- and by extension, protect you. However, the way it does this is not always beneficial in the long-run and is responsible for many of the painful symptoms you experience now, sometimes resulting in PTSD. Processing a trauma is hard, and your brain will avoid it for as long as possible.

  • The brain is also a remarkable healer, and when we allow it to process the trauma in a safe, nonjudgmental environment, it will heal and become stronger.

You are never broken from trauma. Your brain might just be on the defensive right now. Understandably so, it just went through something traumatic! But Newark trauma and PTSD therapy can help healing occur. We make sure to go at your pace; healing has no deadline; we only strive for progress. If you recognize these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, it’s worth reaching out for more information:

How Does PTSD and Trauma Therapy Work?

Counseling for Trauma at Newark Behavioral Health will always be focused on you. At the end of the day, change comes from you. The therapy session should be designed, therefore, in a way that best suits your strengths, doubts, and goals. Surviving trauma is just one tiny puzzle piece in the wonderful mosaic of who you are. Your passions, goals, pasts, present, hobbies, skills, family, friends, favorite song, all of it- makes up who you are. All of it is important in a counseling session. Of course, a big part of healing from trauma, especially PTSD counseling, is using the researched techniques.

  • The techniques we use include, but aren’t limited to:

    Trauma symptom education

Practicing personal, effective coping skills (relaxation exercises, anger-management techniques, guided imagery, mindfulness, etc.)

Support in managing a healthy sleep, exercise, and diet schedule

Work through guilt, self-blame, and other destructive emotions that could be surrounding the trauma.

Heal the fear and anxiety still present. Unaddressed emotions are one of the biggest culprits for trauma symptoms.

Address any co-morbid struggles such as anxiety or depression

What happened to you is in no way your fault. And it has no say in your future. You have shown courage and strength for even reading this and considering therapy to address trauma. You have what it comes to overcome your past and build a future you’re excited for- one of hope, peace, and healing.
